The reason I called this post the 1st 2nd step is simple. The first step is deciding to make the career change. The 2nd step (but the first physical step) is putting things in motion. In this case, research!
I made a promise to myself that I will spend the next year of my life planning the start of my new career. A year might seem like a long time, and it is. All good things take time, and planning a huge career change requires start-up money and a solid plan. If it takes me the whole year that’s fine, if it doesn’t and I get to my goal early, then I’ll happily depart abroad ahead of schedule.
My first step is, of course, research. As I mentioned in my About page, there is a wealth of information on becoming a travel blogger on the internet. There are countless articles on how to make money while traveling abroad, courses on marketing yourself, how to plan your trip, safety tips, and on and on. The only thing I didn’t find was a step by step guide. I know there isn’t some magic algorithm that will pop out a successful blog at the end, but I wanted to read someone’s story; their whole story.
It’s possible that what I’m doing won’t work, and that I’ll be back in my miserable customer service job in late 2017, but I have confidence in myself. I hope you all do to, and I hope you all will join me on this journey to personal freedom and happiness. I feel like a poorly marketed self-help book, but for real…
If I can inspire even one person to try to do the same, or help someone else who is struggling, then it is all worth it. I’m going to post my planning stages and travel in real-time, with the exception of actually getting this WordPress site up and running. Sadly I did have to create the basic template blog before I could relay all of this information to my readers, but I will most definitely write a post on the steps I took to choose a blog platform and the struggles I had along the way.
If you do a quick Google search of free blog sites you can easily find a starting point for your voice to be heard. I’ve dabbled with the idea of starting a blog before, so I knew WordPress was a solid choice. I read it was self-explanatory. For someone with zero web building knowledge, it is not self explanatory. At least I don’t think it is. I’ve had to watch a lot of tutorials, A LOT, but keep in mind that I also had to watch a Snapchat tutorial… In my defense cell phones were the size of bricks when I was a kid, but I digress…
The last tidbit I will leave you with today is that you can use Microsoft Office on your phone and computer for free! Yaaas! My age may (probably) be at fault here, but I had no clue this was a thing. But my dears, it is indeed a thing. If you click here and sign up (for free) you can create and share Excel and Word docs without ever having to buy the programs. I also have it downloaded on my phone, so I can work literally any time there is a wifi signal. I’m never really without a wifi signal these days. Once I head overseas I may need an offline version of Microsoft Office for all of my list making, but I will cross that bridge when I get to it. For now, the free version is just perfect!
Do you have any tips for list making or programs to use abroad? Do you have any blog creation tips you’d care to share? I would love to hear from you!
